If you have ever dealt with a leak in your roof before, then you know first hand that it can present a tricky situation. The source of most roof leaks is hard to find because it actually originates away from where the leak presents itself.

How to Handle a Roof Leak

In order to find where the leak is coming from, it has been said to follow a roofer’s advice and “think like water.” Water typically comes in through worn, broken, or missing shingles or in places where nails have worked themselves loose. Water can also leak through corroded or poorly sealed roof flashing around vents, skylights, or chimneys or along the intersections of roof planes.

Once water passes the roofing, it flows along the sheathing, roof rafters, or topside of ceilings until it finds a place to drip down. Unfortunately for you, the place where the water chooses to drip down and make itself known is usually the most inconvenient. This is why such a leak cannot be put off but must be acted upon as soon as possible.

It is helpful to look for a roof leak during the day. You can go into the attic with a bright flashlight, being sure to only step on secure framing and never on the insulation or topside of the ceiling below. You should start looking about the place where the dripping has occurred and work your way up the roof, looking for wetness along the framing members.

If the weather has been dry for a while, then you may not see much actual moisture but instead can look for water marks, stains, or discolorations on the wood. Then, switch off the light and try to find a hole where daylight shows through the roof. Once you have found an actual hole in the roof or suspicious area, use a system to mark the spots to help yourself remember exactly where they were.

The next step in handling the leaky spots in your roof is generally taken by climbing onto the roof to continue the investigation and make repairs. Although some folks may be aware of the dangers of getting on the roof and capable of handling the job, it is recommended for your safety and for the betterment of your property to call in a professional at this time.
